What does this measure?

The percentage of acreage that is classified as "protected" under the Massachusetts Land Protection Program.

Why is this important?

Designating an area as "protected" places restrictions on land use to prohibit development and to support diverse wildlife and nature habitat while still providing access for the public to use and enjoy.

How is Brookline doing?

In 2019, over 565 acres - or 13% - of land in Brookline was deemed "protected." Brookline had a larger percentage of protected land compared to Cambridge (11%), Arlington (7%) and Everett (5%). In Norfolk County, 20% of land was protected as was 26% of land in the state.
